254 Youth Policy Cafe

254 Youth Policy Cafe is a policy dialogue forum constituted of 7 Policy Analysts serving in different sectors, formerly Young Professionals at the Kenya Institute for Public Policy Research and Analysis (KIPPRA). The aim of the forum is to engage in policy discourse on youth sensitive policy issues nationally, regionally and internationally. The purpose of this is to enhance effectiveness of public participation of the youth with a view to attaining youth inclusive strategies, legislation, and policies.

Welcome for another episode of youth and leadership. Youth make bulky of the the population and voters. Therefore they play a critical role in deciding the kind of people who are put in power during the voting process. This episode is timely now that the country is preparing to vote in a new crop of leaders in the 19th August elections. 254 Youth Policy Cafe team sat down with Irene Kendi .Irene Kendi is an statute Gender and Youth expert with passion for girls education and women empowerment. For over a decade, Irene has crusaded for affirmative and elective leadership positions for women, right from the Students Organization of Nairobi University (SONU) to the Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) and the National Government, where she currently works. Her local and international experience in Youth Affairs advocacy saw her appointed to serve on the Board of  the Youth Advisory Board in July 2021.

Irene holds a Bachelor of Education and a Master of Arts in Women, Leadership and Governance in Africa from the University of Nairobi and a Postgraduate qualification in Strategic Leadership and Management from Coventry University, UK.

In this episode we focus on building back better to enhance #FoodSecurity in #Kenya, especially in the wake of Covid-19. Relevant statistics fleshed out include Multi-Dimensional Poverty and Global Hunger Index while referencing some reports such as: FAO, IFAD, UNICEF, WFP and WHO (2020), UN WOMEN and UNICEF (2020), UNICEF (2019), and Global Hunger Index (2020). 

To conclude the conversation the team highlights #governance concerns, the effects of #covid19 on food security and some #actions that can help alleviate the situation.
Food Security and Building Back Better

An estimated one billion people or around 15 per cent of the world’s population have some form of disability. Yet they continue to be excluded in social, economic, and political aspects of life. Luke Muleka, who is the Founder and Managing Director of Signs Media Kenya Limited been a avid advocate for inclusion of persons with #disabilities. 

Signs Media Kenya Limited was founded in 2011 operating on a social enterprise model with the main objectives being to educate, inform and entertain in sign language by extension enhancing Disability and the Deaf Culture. 

In 2015 they applied to the Communication Authority of Kenya to run a television station broadcasting in Sign Language and have been broadcasting on a free to air platform since February 2017. 

In this episode, we discuss: the policy and regulatory frameworks governing disability inclusion in Kenya; attitudinal, infrastructural, and virtual safe spaces for #PWDs; and ongoing empowerment initiatives. Mr. Muleka also shares his accomplishments over the years and shares vital tips on how to establish a sustainable and scalable business.

The Kenya Institute for Public Policy Research and Analysis (KIPPRA) in its efforts to organize and coordinate activities of Think Tanks in Kenya is organizing the Kenya Think Tanks Symposium themed “Building Back Better: The Role of Think Tanks in Supporting Recovery from COVID-19”. The Symposium seeks to provide a platform to empower think tanks in undertaking a collaborative approach in their efforts to influence policy by embracing peer learning and capacity building and promote conversation between think tanks and policy makers.
